Digital City is a new community project from the team at Keeping Digital, with the mission to make York a digital inclusive city.

About the program.

Digital City is a new community project from the team at Keeping Digital. It's purpose is to provide a city wide support network of volunteers who are on hand to provide both in-person and over the phone technology support. This technology support is vital to helping residents get online and get digital. Being digital in the 21st century is not just about having a social media account, but being digital allows residents to find local support, directories and also allows them to complete activities (for example, the 2021 Census was digital-first as they move away from paper forms). Digital City also is about combating loneliness, with many local residents not being able to talk to a regular individual, and in time will help them keep in touch with friends and families online.
Digital City also will be providing online safety sessions covering many vital issues such as fraud and phishing, helping residents stay safe online. These workshops are free to book onto, alternatively Digital City will have online courses covering these vital issues for those who cannot make it to a workshop or simply would prefer to get this information from the comfort of their homes.

A call for volunteers.

This service isn't possible without volunteers.
Unlike other organisations, we don't charge our volunteers anything to sign up. Becoming a Digital Champion isn't as technical as you may think, all we ask is that you have the vital digital skills such as knowing how to install new software, update devices and how to use standard apps/software. You also should be good at problem solving and have good patience - and if you don't know a solution, why not give it a Google and try to explain it to them in a different way. Volunteers also provide support for residents and can help combat loneliness and so we usually try to allocate volunteers to the same clients as much as possible. Support will be given either via the phone or at one of our Support Centres in person (over a nice cup of tea). Volunteers will be asked to provide references and may be subject to a DBS check, and we do ask that you are able to travel to one of our Support Centres.
